Menelaos Karamaghiolis documented Jelani and his family’s journey from Afghanistan to Europe over a period of three years. Faced with being stranded in Greece and the uncertainty of refugee policy, Jelani confronts the dilemma of sending his daughter unaccompanied to Germany, hoping that the family will be reunited afterwards. Jelani’s children will have to learn violently what it’s like to discover their own planet or how they can create one from scratch – and whether Germany is the solution or just a new nightmare. With a minimal cinematic approach and without emotional exaggeration, the film highlights the limits of human survival and the ethical challenges of the refugee experience, while affirming the power of documentary cinema to provoke reflection and reshape our understanding of the reality faced by migrants.
