Summary Corfu, 1909. Arathymos and his young wife Margarita take benevolent Gyftogiannos, under their protection. The latter has returned to his homeland after many years away. Margarita was once Gyftogiannos’ beloved, but she is now the local stud’s mistress. The stud, Peponas, kills Arathymos and blames it on Gyftogiannos. The latter, to save his beloved from scandal, allows himself to be arrested, tried and sent to prison.
