Summary Aliki, doctor Antreas Vlantis’ daughter, is getting engaged, but although everyone is celebrating, an old woman leaves the house without saying goodbye. She is an unfortunate mother, Martha (Christina Sylva), who lives at a nearby house, and starts to narrate her bitter story. Many years ago, when she was just a kid, she had a friend at her age, Andreas. They grew up together and fell for one another, but the war separated them, just before they got married. Martha was pregnant and gave birth to their daughter, Aliki. When she heard that the man she loved was killed, in order to assure a comfortable life for Aliki, she had an affair with Stathis, a profiteer fellow villager. However, Andreas was alive and, when he returned, sent her away. Martha, having lost her memory, stayed for a while at some poor peasants’ house and then, when she regained her memory -the war was over by that time- returned to her hometown. Andreas and Aliki were gone. She looked for them in Athens and heard that they had left for the U.S. She got a job at Vlasis’ bar, where Katerina, a fellow villager, was singing. When Katerina killed Vlasis, Martha got a job at a textile factory and that’s where she saw her daughter again. She was the fiancée of her boss’s son but didn’t have the courage to talk to her. Now, a sudden fainting brings doctor Vlantis and her daughter Aliki by her side. They recognize her and become what the poor woman had always wanted: an ineffably happy family.
