Summary The ship-owner Dimitris Valentis leaves his daughter and visitors for a while in order to go to a nearby tavern and lose himself in his memories. His memories burst out and his life passes before his eyes in painful images. He was about to marry Anna when World War II broke out. He was then serving the royal aviation and fell in the sea with his aircraft and, although he was rescued by the English who transferred him to Cairo, in Athens he was thought to be dead. His unexpected return, after the liberation, caused a lot of upset to a number of people. His own girlfriend had become a whore, and although she still loved him, she couldn’t face him. She had nothing left to do but to commit suicide.
