Summary An upstanding and brave young man, Giorgos Doumaks, is determined to fight the Germans. He loves the sister of his childhood friend Christos Apostolou, Filio, who leaves her family and follows him to the mountains. Together they join the Resistance and fight the occupiers, until Filio is captured and dies from torture in prison. After the Liberation, the two friends find themselves on different sides of the Civil War. Giorgos is a partisan in the mountains, and Christos, as an officer of the Greek Army, is placed at the head of the squad pursuing him. Giorgos is arrested and court-martialed. During the trial, the two old friends witness many of their beliefs fall apart and realize the vanity of the fratricidal war.
