Summary The poor and inconspicuous employee Kaiti meets, on an excursion, a young civil engineer, Pavlos, falls in love with him, and their relationship, under the pressures of brother and mother, ends up in marriage. Pavlos undertakes the construction of a block of flats, a project assigned to him by the wife of the businessman Vertis, the beautiful Lilian. Later on, he submits to her attraction and becomes her lover. Kaiti, of course, finds out about it, and, despite her tactical retreats, she doesn’t manage to save their marriage. Now she is left with her daughter and is forced to ask for a job from her former boss, Kostas Kosmidis. In the meantime, Vertis finds out about the infidelity of his wife and stops the work at the construction site, causing great anxiety to Pavlos, who then tries to commit suicide. Kaiti stands by him, but he has been irreparably exposed. Her love and Kosmidis’ assistance help him to get back on his feet, but when he is introduced to a rich bride as his match, he can’t stand the pain of separation and commits suicide on the day of his engagement. After his death, Kaiti marries Kosmidis, and the story ends with a bittersweet taste.
