Summary A few years after the Greek Revolution of 1821, the newly established state, under the reign of the Bavarian King Otto, brought to trial the major chieftains of the struggle, Theodoros Kolokotronis and Georgios Plapoutas, with the charge of high treason. The notorious trial of 1833, which took place in Nauplion, shook the nation, because everyone knew that the two heroes were completely innocent. The chairman of the court, Athanasios Polyzoidis, and the judge, Georgios Tertsetis, refused to countersign the sentence of death which had been dictated by the palace through the three vicegerents Armansperg, Maurer and Abel. The Bavarians ordered the Minister of Justice to intervene, and he indicted them. As a result, they are dragged to the prison dungeon and stand trial for high treason. In the end, however, they are acquitted in a carnival-like atmosphere of celebration.
