A stripper longs to become a mother, but as her partner refuses to grant her wish, she turns to his best friend "for help".This complicated dramatic situation which is interwoven with two basic themes of Godard (the romantic couple and prostitution, for the first time in his oeuvre) gives birth to a "neo-realist musical" influenced by Brecht, Jacques Demy and Hollywood. As Anna Karina puts it with mischievous wit in the end "I don't know if it is a comedy or a tragedy, but it certainly is a masterpiece".
