Summary After the German invasion in April 1941, their Bulgarian allies invade Eastern Macedonia. A Bulgarian army unit, with Stepan Raiko in charge, arrives and settles in a village in Drama, Rodoneri. First off, they arrest the president of the village, Manolis Devetzis, who was the henchman of Pavlos Melas and had old affairs to settle with the Bulgarian revolutionary committee. An old partner of theirs, Grigoris Theofilou, has been assigned presidential duties. Devetzis’ son, Nikos, who is wounded and hospitalized in Athens, is informed of the news and escapes the German-occupied capital. He goes straight to his village, along with a friend of his, journalist Vasilis Anthimos, with the intention of assuming action. The daughter of the agent provocateur Theofilos, Katerina, with whom Nikos used to be in love, works as the secretary of the Bulgarian commander and uses her position to relay crucial information, via the priest of the village, to Nikos’ comrades-in-arms. When the group of the “Free Greeks of Macedonia” seizes a Bulgarian train, Stepan personally assumes command. In the meantime, Nikos finds out about Katerina’s role in the train case, and their love is renewed. In the end, Nikos and his men enter the town and, with the help of the inhabitants, expel the invaders. During the Bulgarians’ retreat, many of them are killed, among them their leader Stepan.
