Summary With the outbreal of the Greek-Italian war in 1940, Nestoras and his friend head for the front. Nestoras’ sister Martha also does her duty as a volunteer nurse and encounters one of her brother’s friends, Kostas, who has been wounded. A tender relationship develops between them. Seven months later, the Germans enter Athens and Kostas’ father becomes one of their collaborators. Nestoras, Martha and their friends join an underground resistance organization – in which Kostas, however, is not welcome, because of his father. They are all rounded up by the Germans, even Kostas, and are tortured. Martha emerges alive from the ordeal, while some of the others are executed. Kostas, in order to prove himself, helps Nestor escape and arranges for the arrest and execution of his father as a traitor. After the Liberation, and free at last to marry, Martha and Kostas join their lives and fates.
