ANNA RODITI

Summary During World War II, a lieutenant of the Royal Navy, Aris Galanos, arrives in Italian-occupied Rhodes on a secret mission. He takes the place of the Italian officer Giovanni Retsini and, as captain Giovanni, now helps the residents of the island as much as possible. At the same time, he also falls in love with Anna Roditi, a member of the Resistance. He travels back and forth to the Middle East carrying secret plans for the defense of the Dodecanese. The revelation of Aris’s activity also leads to Anna’s arrest, who is about to be court-martialled. The capitulation of Italy, however, averts such an unpleasant development. With the end of the war and the unification of the Dodecanese islands with Greece, Aris returns to Rhodes to live there forever with his beloved Anna Roditi.

Sporting a fascist uniform and carrying classified documents, Aris heads for the Tower of the Knights housing the Italian Army Headquarters. On the way, a young bootblack makes the fascist salute to him and Aris clouts him on the head with all his might. Aris is ceremoniously led to the Italian Commander. Aris relays to the Commander false orders supposedly issued by Duce for tolerance and compassion towards the locals, while at the same time he elicits important information about the defence of the island. On his way out of the Headquarters, Aris runs into a policeman who had arrested Pantelis on charges that he was hiding a banned Greek newspaper under his hat. Aris arranges that Pantelis is set free, which leaves Pantelis crossing himself in astonishment. At a deserted country church. Two Greek partisans keeping watch over the Italian prisoner dictate to him a letter of reassurance for his father. Arm-in-arm with Anna, Aris goes sightseeing on Rhodes. The visit the valley of the butterflies and end up in the countryside. A local tune can be heard. Dressed in the uniform of an Italian army officer, Aris sees to the release of an islander charged by the Italian police with sabotage on the grounds that the islander's donkey does not obey commands when ridden by an Italian.
