June 18 to 22 2026
Lais Open Air Cinema, Greek Film Archive

Eight very recent Chinese films, representative of contemporary Chinese cinema, all presented in their Greek premiere screenings!

China Film Festival will take place from the 18th to 22th of June at the Laïs Open-Air Cinema of the Greek Film Archive, offering a unique opportunity to the audience of Athens to experience contemporary Chinese film production through 8 new films in their Greek premiere: adventures, period films, noirs, love stories, documentaries, animation and gastronomy.

This event marks the beginning of a collaboration between the Greek Film Archive and the China Film Archive, while it coincides with the 20th anniversary of the China–Greece Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

This year, we are also celebrating the 20th anniversary of the China–Greece Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which, in simple terms, means twenty years of Greek–Chinese friendship.

The Festival is held with the support of the Chinese Film Administration, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Greece.

Greece and China share much in common: both are ancient civilizations with immense influence and contributions in the fields of art and science, having left their mark on every aspect of human intellectual activity.

On June 18, opening day of the festival, the two guardians of cinematic memory in Greece and China will co-sign a memorandum of cooperation between the two national archives extending through 2030. The China Film Archive and the Greek Film Archive, both members of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), will intensify their collaboration through cultural exchanges and a variety of initiatives aimed at bringing audiences into closer contact with the rich cinematic heritage of both countries, thereby strengthening the ties between the Chinese and Greek peoples.

Within this framework, we are pleased to announce that a corresponding festival of Greek cinema will take place next year in Beijing and will be attended by a Greek delegation.

It is a great pleasure for us to host the China Film Festival 2026 at the Laïs Open-Air Cinema of the Greek Film Archive and to share with our Chinese friends the unique experience of the Greek open-air cinema.

It should be noted that on June 19, 20 and 21 (Friday to Sunday) the Cinema Museum of the Greek Film Archive will be open to the public from 19.00-21.00.
