Digitization – Information Society: “DIGITAL REPOSITORY OF THE GREEK FILM ARCHIVE AND THE MUSEUM OF CINEMATOGRAPHY”

The Greek Film Archive is financed by the Operational Programme Information Society and the project “Digitization – Information Society: “DIGITAL REPOSITORY OF THE GREEK FILM ARCHIVE AND THE MUSEUM OF CINEMATOGRAPHY”
The objectives of the project are: the digitization and processing of a portion of the films, as well as the collections of archival material belonging to the Greek Film Archive, the projection and promotion of this wider collection, and, consequently, of cinema in Greece, as well as the projection and promotion of the Museum of Cinematography through the Internet.
Today, the demand for new technologies presents a challenge, which, together with the request for “easy access”, makes the creation of a “digital repository” of our cinematographic cultural heritage a top priority. Besides, the demand for use of these archives is constantly increasing, and the Archive’s adaptation to the new technological reality is imperative.
More and more researchers are turning to the celluloid record of the previous century, as well as to the other materials collected in the Film Archive. In response, film archives all over the world are making their resources and collections open to the public. We hope that our Foundation will become far more accessible than it has been in the past.  Even more important, however, is the work that it can accomplish in the future, taking advantage of advances in technology and cinematography. The use of new technologies will facilitate both the evolution of the archive and its use by the public and specialists alike - so that many more people can discover and make use of the treasures of the Greek Film Archive.
