Based on the book of the same title by Vassilis Vassilikos on the murder of doctor and EDA MP Grigoris Lambrakis by parastatals in the troubled Greece of the 1960s, the emblematic “Z” has as its starting point the attack on a dynamic MP of the Left and activist of the Peace movement and the immediate attempted cover-up, following the subsequent investigation by an investigator determined to bring the true facts to light. Irene Papas, who fled Greece upon the establishment of the dictatorship and played an active role in the Resistance against the junta, happily accepted Costa-Gavras's proposal to impersonate Grigoris Lambrakis' wife. She is the distinct Greek presence within a select international cast, as is Mikis Theodorakis, who is presented through his tense musical composition. A bold, vital portrait of the social impasse of the period that captivated the global audience and took home the Jury Prize and Best Actor award (Trintignant) at the Cannes Film Festival, before also winning the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Editing.
